April, 2004
April 2:
Christian is upto 2lb 8 1/2oz.  He's now 14 1/4" long.  Vent settings are:  23% o2, 34 BPM (Breaths Per   Minute), 18 Pressure (the force in which the o2 goes into the lungs.  The lower the number, the better.).

April 4:  Christian now has an infection :( He's now 2lb 10oz.

April 5: The infection is in Christian's PICC line.  The doctors took out the PICC line and started an IV.  He's now 2lb 13oz and 15" long.

April 8:  Christian had a bad day.  They still haven't started feeds.  Christian had to go to Radiologoy.  They found out that he still has meconium in his bowel and intestines.  They gave Christian a suppository to try and get rid of some of the meconium.  Christian had a bad blood gas, so they had to go up some on vent settings.  He's now reached 3lbs!

April 15:  Christian is upto 3lb 7oz and is 15" long.  He's down to 30 BPM on the Vent.  They've taken him off the GOMCO machine.

April 16:  Christian is down to 28 BPM on vent.  They've started feedings of 1/2cc every hour of breast milk.  They also started caffeine to try and help get him off the vent.

April 17:  They stopped Christian's feed because his tummy is getting hard (that's a sign that he's not processing the milk).  They started antibiotics again.  Christian is down to a pressure of 10 on the vent.

April 18:  Christian is down to 25 BPM on the vent.  Christian has pneumonia and they gave him antibiotics for that.

April 20:  Christian is upto 3lb 11oz and is 16" long.  He's at a rate of 22 BPM on the vent at 21% o2 (which is like room air).

April 21: Christian is upto 3lb 14oz.  They have decided to test him for Cystic Fibrosis (results will take at least a week).  We are very scared about this.  The doctor said that they are testing because he's not progressing on eating very quickly or coming off the vent.  We are very worried!  People with Cystic Fibrosis have problems with their respiratory systems, digestive systems and reproductive organs.  Their life span is about 32 years.  You can see why we are worried!!

April 22: They've decided that Christian does have ROP (retinopothy of prematurity).  The retina is getting ready to separate.  This sometimes corrects itself, but other times requires surgery.  They are going to see if Christian's will correct itself.

April 23:  Christian is upto a pressure of 19, but down to 18 BPM on the vent.

April 24: Christian started really going to town on his binky and my finger today.  This is great!  Now he just needs to get off the darn vent and he'll be all set!

April 25
:  They got another PICC line in for Christian today.  It's in his leg.  His head ultrasound came back normal, so no brainbleed!

April 27: Christian is back upto 20 BPM and 25% o2.  He's 4lb 3oz.

April 29:  Christian coded today.  They had to "bag" him to get him breathing again.  Not good!

April 30:  Christian is started formula again.  1/2cc of Progestimil (predigested formula) every hour.  Christian does NOT have Cystic Fibrosis!  Yeah!  He's down to 18 bpm on the vent!
